Trump Announces New Reciprocal Tariffs

On April 2 (Liberation Day), in an effort to mitigate trade deficits with U.S. global trading partners, President Donald J. Trump announced the reciprocal tariffs that would apply to each specific country. The reciprocal tariffs were postponed to take effect on July 9 – and again postponed to August 1. The 3-week reprieve to August 1 was granted to allow countries without a trade deal additional time to negotiate.

Meanwhile, on July 7, the president sent letters to the leaders of at least 14 countries to notify them of the new reciprocal tariff rate that will apply to U.S. imports from their countries beginning August 1 if a trade agreement is not reached. The chart below reflects the change in reciprocal tariffs between the April 2 and July 7 announcements.

The president also indicated in his letters that the U.S. will “perhaps” consider adjusting the new tariff levels, “depending on our relationship with your Country.”

The administration announced that more letters to other trading partners are forthcoming in the following days.
