Before each tax year, payers are required to report non-employee compensation and specified payments on IRS Form 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC. One copy of the form must be given to the recipient and a second must be uploaded to the IRS before the required due dates.

What is a 1099?
The difference between 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC.
While a 1099-NEC is typically issued for individuals providing services, a 1099-MISC differs slightly. It is required for everyone to whom payments were made during the year for various miscellaneous items.
File Form 1099-MISC for each person to whom you have paid during the year:
- At least $10 in royalties or broker payments in lieu of dividends or tax-exempt interest.
- At least $600 in:
- Rents.
- Prizes and awards.
- Other income payments.
- Medical and health care payments.
- Crop insurance proceeds.
- Cash payments for fish (or other aquatic life) you purchase from anyone engaged in the trade or business of catching fish.
- Generally, the cash paid from a notional principal contract to an individual, partnership, or estate.
- Payments to an attorney.
- Any fishing boat proceeds.
File a Form 1099-NEC if the following conditions are met for payments to vendors:
- You made the payment to someone who is not your employee;
- You made the payment for services in the course of your trade or business (including government agencies and nonprofit organizations);
- You made the payment to an individual, partnership, estate, or in some cases, a corporation; and
- You made payments to the payee of at least $600 during the year.
1099 Vendor Process
Why are businesses required to know this?
Understanding 1099 forms is crucial for businesses as per IRS regulations, requiring issuance to payees and submission to the IRS for payments exceeding $600, provided specific criteria are met. This process can be cumbersome, as it necessitates reviewing every payment made throughout the business year by the end of January annually. This allows only a brief period to review payments made in the final months of the year.
