Trade War with China Escalates (again)

Subsequent to the White House’s “Liberation Day” announcement of adjusted reciprocal tariffs targeting Chinese imports at 34%, China announced additional tariffs at parity with the USA’s trade adjustments – a corresponding 34%.  On April 8, 2025, citing Section 4(b) of his Liberation Day executive order, Trump announced that the US would respond to this retaliation with additional measures. Just before the 34% tariff on Chinese imports went into effect, the White House issued a second executive order raising the original 34% to 84%.

As of April 9, 2025, all imports from China are subject to the 20% additional tariff Trump implemented in March, plus the amended 84%, totaling at a net rate of 104% additional duties on all Chinese imports. Shipments subject to the 2018 section 301 tariffs will also be subject to that rate (up to 25%), and any other existing trade measures (such as antidumping and countervailing orders) will continue to apply. Then, after May 2, 2025, imports from China will be further sanctioned by the removal of the de minimis exemption for imports declared under $800.

For its part, China has announced it will again raise its sanctions against US imports to parity, updating their tariff against US imports to 84%.

Using executive powers, the President can prescribe or revoke trade sanctions in a matter of hours.
