New Reciprocal Tariffs and Copper Duty Announced by President Trump
President Donald J. Trump has issued formal notifications to eight additional countries regarding new reciprocal tariffs set to take effect on August 1, 2025. These tariffs replace the previously announced Liberation Day tariffs, which were scheduled to begin on July 9 but were postponed to allow more time for bilateral trade negotiations.
Here is a comparison of the initial and revised tariff rates based on the July notifications issued to date:

In addition to these tariffs, President Trump has announced a 50% tariff on copper imports, also effective August 1, citing national security concerns. Copper ranks as the second most-used material in U.S. defense applications, and it is also vital to industries such as construction, electrical equipment, transportation, and industrial machinery.
Chile currently leads global copper production, accounting for 27% of the world’s supply in 2024, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Peru, China, and the United States. The administration states that the new tariff aims to encourage the development of a “dominant copper industry” within the U.S.
