Mexico Raises Tariffs on Imports from China

The mexican government, through the Ministry of Economy, announced a package of tariffs on products originating from China and other countries without free trade agreements with Mexico. This measure, approved in December by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, aims to strengthen domestic industry, correct trade imbalances, and generate additional revenue.

Effective start: January 1, 2026.

Official Objectives

  • Protect around 350,000 jobs in sensitive sectors such as automotive, textiles, footwear, steel, and manufacturing.
  • Promote reindustrialization and reduce dependence on imports.
  • Generate additional tax revenue: estimated at about USD 3.76 billion in 2026.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the United States ahead of the upcoming USMCA review.

Most Affected Sectors

  • Automotive and auto parts:  Vehicles (including electric), components such as headlights, bumpers, radio receivers, spark plug cables: 25% to 50%.
  • Textiles, footwear, and clothing:  Garments, fabrics, threads, coats, raincoats, shoes, and leather goods: 25% to 35%.
  • Plastics, glass, and steel:  Bottles, jars, metal furniture, pipes, doors, rolled steel, wire rod: up to 35%.
  • Home appliances and household or school items:  Microwaves, fans, ovens, plastic furniture, toys, office supplies: 25% to 35%.
  • Hygiene, cleaning, and cosmetics: Soaps, toothpaste, shampoo, makeup, perfumes, and deodorants: 25% to 35%, lipstick up to 36%.

Tariff Increases: Most rates fall between 20% and 35%, with specific cases reaching 50% for automotive parts. New tariffs range between 5% and 50%, depending on the sector.
