Cargo Theft News

A local warehouse in Laredo, TX, had a shipment that vanished without a trace. The shipment was carrying avocados. The driver followed the regular procedure to collect the pickup only to find out the driver was a fraud. This left the local warehouse with $200,000 in damages. Sadly, cargo theft happens very often; however, it’s not being taken into consideration, as stated by a company owner in McLennan, TX, who may have to shut down due to having six loads stolen last year.

In the last year, cargo theft has increased by 68%, according to Cargonet, which shows cargo theft at a 10-year streak. The cargo pirates are using stolen motor carrier operating authorizations and stolen broker identities to swipe the freight. Food, beverages, and electronics are the number one targets.

Efforts have been made to combat cargo theft, with rules implemented to enhance security. For instance, drivers are now required to provide authentication on IT systems to detect fraud. They must show proof of their motor carrier, along with a physical address that can be confirmed with the post office. These measures are designed to significantly reduce the risk of cargo theft.
