USTR Proposes 25% Section 301 Tariff on Brazilian Imports

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has proposed a 25% Section 301 tariff on certain products imported from Brazil, according to a June 1 Federal Register notice. Goods already subject to Section 232 tariffs would be exempt, along with specific products listed in the notice's annex.

The proposal also carves out exemptions for raw materials whose taxation could create domestic supply shortages, products that could cause economy-wide disruptions, and goods that cannot be grown or produced in sufficient quantities in the U.S. or sourced elsewhere.

The action stems from a July 2025 USTR investigation, initiated at President Trump's direction, into Brazil's trade practices, including digital trade, electronic payment services, preferential tariffs, anticorruption enforcement, intellectual property protections, ethanol market access, and illegal deforestation.

The USTR is now accepting public input for a July 6, 2026, hearing. Requests to appear at  the hearing are due by June 22, with written comments to be submitted by July 1.

Full details, including the applicable HTS numbers are available in the June 1 Federal Register notice: Federal Register Notice
