Updates to Section 232 Metal Tariffs Now in Effect

The Section 232 adjustments of the tariffs on Aluminum, Steel, and Copper announced on June 1, 2026 have entered into effect as of today, June 8, 2026. Leading up to the change, CBP released CSMS memorandum # 68855869 providing guidance on the tariffs for importers, brokers, and filers.

The memorandum outlines the scope of application for the new tariffs, as well as the reconfigured tranche of aluminum, steel, and copper tariffs instituted by President Trump’s April 2nd proclamation

Further, the memo contains additional information on several aspects of the current state of the metal tariffs, including the proper reporting instructions for applying the tariff-exempt treatment of the US value of articles eligible for special tariff treatment under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), as well as which tariffs are not eligible for 232 exemption under the section 122 tariffs and the continuing imposition of 200% tariffs of aluminum products from Russia.

Closing the memo is a reminder for importers to anticipate the country of smelt and cast reporting requirements for copper products, a functionality still under development in ACE.
