U.S.–China Tariff Truce Gets a 90-Day Extension
In a move widely anticipated by markets and trade watchers, President Trump signed an executive order on Monday granting a 90-day extension to the current U.S. – China tariff pause – just hours before higher duties were set to return. Without the extension, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods would have reverted back to reciprocal tariffs the US imposed on China, possibly even to triple-digits at the height of the trade clash in April, with Beijing poised to retaliate in kind.
Under the renewed truce, U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports will remain at 30%, while China holds its duties on American goods at 10%. The reprieve preserves tariff relief first negotiated in May after talks in Geneva and followed by another round of discussions in Stockholm in late July. Both sides framed the pause as a chance to keep negotiations moving on long-standing disputes, including market access for U.S. exporters, trade deficit concerns, restrictions on advanced technology sales, and illicit fentanyl smuggling.
President Trump has also urged China to increase its purchases of U.S. agricultural products – specifically soybeans – which sent prices higher on Monday, though no firm commitments have been announced. On the technology front, the administration recently eased certain chip export restrictions to Chinese companies, with a controversial revenue-sharing requirement for U.S. firms.
For importers and exporters, the extension offers short-term breathing room but not long-term certainty. Supply chains now have until mid-November before the next decision point, when tariffs could once again escalate. While the trade war may be on hold, the underlying tensions remain unresolved.
