The Future of The Air Cargo Industry and Our Climate

Climate change and global warming are issues that have been discussed all over the world for quite some time.  Most recently, at the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015, 195 Countries agreed upon a first ever, legally binding climate agreement that will go into effect in 2020.

With all eyes on limiting global warming and controlling emissions, how long will it take before Air Cargo is being examined?  Possibly sooner than we think.  A report by the Center of Biological Diversity stated, “Airplanes could generate 43 Gigatonnes of pollution through 2050”.   It goes on to say that a staggering amount of CO2 is released by aircraft.  In fact, aircraft CO2 emissions currently account for some 11% of all transportation sources in the U.S. alone.

A lot of time, money and resources are being used to try to find a cleaner, more eco-friendly way to fly, but most of these solutions seem to be a far distance away.  However, there is a possible alternative in the works.  The Solar Impulse Plane became the first ever solar plane to fly by night from one continent to another when it flew from Japan to Hawaii in July of 2015. Richard Northcote, Chief Sustainability Officer of Covestro, the producer of the high-tech polymer materials that the Solar Impulse Plane is comprised of said, “Solar impulse embodies everything we stand for as a company and it makes a significant contribution to raising awareness of the need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel while increasing our need to be more energy efficient.”

With the future of the solar impulse plane still being decided, there is a possibility that soon your air cargo freight may be traveling in a more energy efficient, eco-friendly way.
