The biggest Container Vessels Are on the Move

Beginning in June, the French shipping line, CMA CGM, will provide its biggest vessels for ports between Asia and the USA. These vessels are some of the biggest vessels in the world and are designed with the latest technologies in order to provide more protection of the environment. A total of 6 container vessels, with 18 000 TEU, will join the Pearl River Express Service. These vessels are the biggest of their kind: CMA CGM Bougainville, CMA CGM Kerguelen, CMA CGM Georg Forster, CMA CGM Vasco de Gama, CMA CGM Zheng He and CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin.

Last December, the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin vessel was the first vessel to be called into a US port. This particular vessel left Oakland Port (California) on January 4, 2016 and was inaugurated on February 19, 2016 in Long Beach by Jacques Saadé, CEO of CMA CGM group.

Historically, American ports welcome vessels with 13000 to 15000 TEU capacity, however, CMA CGM was able to gain access for these larger than normal vessels through an agreement with the ports in Los Angeles and Oakland, CA. While in port in Los Angeles, the Benjamin Franklin required 9 cranes during a 56 hour period to be unloaded and then re-loaded, which represents about 11,200 crane movements. The French shipping company plans to develop more transactions through the US and Asia ports in the future.
