Tariff Reductions on Steel and Aluminum Parts from Canada and Mexico Now Available
On April 23, 2026, a notice was published in the Federal Register by the Department of Commerce delineating procedures for claiming eligibility for import tariff adjustments on steel and aluminum articles produced by Mexican and Canadian facilities for US producers of automobiles and “MHDVs” (medium and heavy-duty vehicles).
The notice declares an open submission period from the April 23 date of publication and lists multiple requirements for submission, review, and substantiation necessary to claim eligibility for the tariff adjustments, including:
- That applicants be producers located in Mexico or Canada, and that the eligible articles submitted are for automobile or MHDV production
- That said companies make commitments to expand primary steel and aluminum production capacity
- That the eligible articles are qualified for preferential treatment under the US-Mexico-Canada agreement (USMCA)
- That the tariff adjustments are subject to quantities tied to projected annual new production capacities and to fixed, “commercially reasonable” time periods
Allyn International is actively supporting the trade community in understanding their tariff exposure and maximizing their refund eligibility.
