Strike to Ensue Next Week for Spanish Dockworkers

The dockworkers’ union announced they will officially go on strike for three days next week, starting June 5, 2017.  These strikes are set for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and could lead to future walkouts. The strike is in objection to the government’s strategy to loosen the limitations of hiring workers at ports.  Initially, the union’s plan was set for a total of eight days of strikes between May 24 and June 9, 2017 but they were able to arrive at an agreement with the port employer’s association, Anesco.  On Thursday, the leaders of the union decided to pursue the remaining days of the strike after not being able to secure the jobs of the current 6,000 registered dockworkers.

These strikes are likely to cause delays for any shipments moving in and out of the country.  For example, the Cadiz port alone imported and exported 3.6 million tons of cargo in 2016.  After the strike and potential walkouts, shipments will be backlogged, which could further delay impending shipments.  If you have any cargo moving in and out of Spain in the upcoming weeks and are concerned, Allyn International can help.  Please reach out to our experts for advice on solutions at sales@allynintl.com.
