Simply SIMI – Importing in Argentina
For those with experience exporting goods to Argentina, you may know all too well how challenging customs clearance can be with the required prior approval by the Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos (Argentine Tax and Customs Authority). Fortunately, a new system, SIMI, has been developed to simplify the process.
The Comprehensive Import Monitoring System, SIMI (Sistema Integral de Monitoreo de Importaciones), is a tool built to monitor imports in Argentina. Through this system, import licenses are processed electronically, in advance, and free of charge. The declarations made are valid for 180 calendar days from the date of approval and must be done for each import.
Prospective users for the system need to meet the following requirements to obtain a username and subsequent assignment of services for SIMI:
- Unique Tax Identification Code (C.U.I.T.)
- Be registered in the Special Customs Registries
- Have Fiscal Code Level 3 in AFIP
In return, SIMI offers the following services:
- The "Electronic Single Window" service (VUCE)
- SIMI Consultation service
- SIMI Authorization service
To obtain import authorization on the goods that import to Argentina, you must declare:
- Cargo details such as information of the consignee, description, unit value of the cargo, total value, type of unit of measure, origin of the materials, part number, number of pieces, and tariff classification of the piece
- Detail of the cost of freight. The tolerance of change in declared costs is 7%
