Potential Tariff Increase on Computer Chips
Donald Trump, while speaking to House Republicans on January 27 advised that he would be increasing tariffs on foreign made computer chips and semiconductor devices.
Trump said, "In the very near future, we are going to be placing tariffs on foreign production of computer chips, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals to return production of these essential goods to the United States,".
Chips from Taiwan would be greatly affected by these increases, as Taiwan currently dominates the global advanced semiconductor market. Increasing tariffs on Taiwanese chips could greatly increase the cost of day-to-day items like computers and smartphones, but it could also affect many AI investments as companies like Nvidia get semiconductor components from Taiwan.
