Overview of the Canadian Rail Strike

On August 22, 2024, Canada's rail transport could experience stoppages after two of the largest railroads Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Canadian National Railway (CN), announced potential halts in operations over labor contracts.

 What is Happening?

The Teamsters, representing over 10,000 rail workers, are demanding improvements to scheduling practices and safety provisions to address staffing issues. This dispute has led to disruptions. Scheduled shipments of perishables, automobiles, propane, hazardous goods, water purification chemicals, and more.

 How Will This Affect Me?

Consequences are set to ripple through the U.S. economy. Imminent stoppages include all shipments originating in Canada, and those bound for the U.S. Union Pacific. The current estimate is that more than 2,500 cross-border railcars per day will be affected.

A disruption can severely affect all industries that utilize Canadian railroads, considering roughly 30% of all Canadian rail volume is cross-border. Ports rely on rail and multi-modal transport options and are expected to be impacted as well. Intra-Canada less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments also rely upon rail for long-distance transit.

What’s Next?

Although negotiations between the rail companies and Teamsters remain contentious, several offers have been made. Unfortunately, key issues remain unresolved. All eyes are focused on whether a last-minute resolution can be achieved to avoid any major rail disruptions.
