Migrant Crisis Influences European Transportation
In the last couple of months, Europe has been facing an enormous influx of migrants that has also affected the transportation industry. Problems began to appear at the beginning of the summer as thousands of migrants were trying to cross the English Channel from Calais, France. As a result, the Eurotunnel, as well as the ferries, were often stopped or delayed. The truckers were forced to wait for hours to board or to be rerouted via other French, Belgian or Dutch ports. Due to these inconveniences, there were increased costs to hauler companies including the penalties for not delivering the goods on time.
In recent weeks, the crisis has escalated in the south-east borders of the EU. Each day, thousands of migrants, mainly from Syria, Pakistan or Afghanistan, are trying to enter the Schengen area using the so called “Balkan” route. Since Hungary erected a fence around its southern border last month, the main flow of migrants is now to Slovenia. These issues are continuously increasing the tension among the EU countries and haulers are worried the politicians will reinstate border controls. This will bring queues and delays, which would impact all parts of supply chain, especially just-in-time logistics, whether for car parts or perishable goods.
