FDA: Food Traceability Final Rule

In January 2011, Congress enacted the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), in response to dramatic changes in the global food system and its role both as a significant public health problem and to protect economic well-being of the food system.

The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has issued the final rule on the new requirements for additional traceability records for certain foods. This ruling establishes the requirements that go beyond existing regulations.  Subject to this new regulation are companies or persons who manufacture, process, pack, or hold foods included in the Food Traceability List (FTL).

The Food Traceability Final Rule requires companies or persons to share critical information with entities within their supply chain. Below are the key features that this information must include:

Critical Tracking Events: Key data elements such as harvesting, cooling, initial packing of a raw agricultural commodities, first land-based receiver, shipping, receiving; and transformation.

Traceability Lot Code: A descriptor (alphanumeric), use to uniquely identify lot.

Traceability Plan: Companies or persons must establish and maintain a traceability plan containing a description of the procedures, points of contact & areas used for farming.

Additional Requirements: Recordkeeping (paper and electronic).
