Exploring new markets in the Caribbean, Pacific, or Sub-Saharan Africa? Get to know ASCYCUDA.
Firms often avoid unfamiliar markets, such as small islands and least-developed countries (LDCs) when choosing their export locations. This is due to a false impression that such regions are not well connected to the global trade network from either the customs or the brokerage side. In reality, most least developed countries and small islands have been connected for decades to an electronic customs system spanning the globe in more than 100 countries from all levels of development.
What is ASYCUDA?
ASYCUDA, which stands for Automated System for Customs Data, is a computerized customs management system developed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to facilitate trade and customs clearance processes. The system was developed in the early 1980s to address customs needs in Western Africa and was quickly adopted by many developing and least-developed countries worldwide.
What is the coverage of ASYCUDA?
The system is used by 102 countries in many regions including Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific; thus, facilitating access to emerging markets that have been unfamiliar to many exporters.
What are the functions of ASYCUDA?
ASYCUDA provides an electronic platform for trade documentation, customs declarations, and other customs-related procedures, allowing for more efficient and transparent customs operations. The system also helps to reduce administrative burdens and costs for both traders and customs authorities and can improve the accuracy and reliability of customs data. The system also allows for paying fees electronically.
Who has access to ASYCUDA?
The system is used by customs officers, traders, customs brokers, freight forwarders, postal services, couriers, and other parties involves in the supply chain. The system utilizes Electronic Data Transfer (EDI) to transfer information among users of the system.
