Department of Homeland Security Shutdown

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security is scheduled to expire at midnight tonight. The agency shut down will result in the furlough of 30,000 of the Department’s 230,000 employees according to a New York Times Congressional Memo.

The shutdown is preceded by a heated debate in congress over immigration reform that has yet to reach a conclusion.

Among the government officials most affected are administrative and front office staff that will be sent home, likely resulting in delays of routine operations. Transportation Security Administration officers at airports, Border Patrol Agents, frontline law enforcement officials and members of the Coast guard would be required to report to work.
