Current Events – June 2017
Venezuela, Sri Lanka, Great Britain. These are three countries that you may or may not pay attention to their current events. But did you know what’s happening in those countries and how it may affect your job? Certainly, the recent terrorist attacks in Great Britain have been covered well in the media – but what of the current issues in Venezuela and Sri Lanka? Probably not covered enough in the US. Venezuela has been in the midst of massive protests, spurred by political issues, food shortages, and rising crime. Sri Lanka has been inundated with rain and subsequent flooding, causing hundreds of deaths.
All three of these countries’ issues have a significant potential to affect our clients’ ability to ship freight there – both in the near term and even in the long term.
Certainly, you may have clients that do not ship to any of these countries right now - but by paying attention to all international events and news, you can prepare your clients for potential logistical challenges – this can also be very beneficial in your relationship with your client as well. The more you know and understand local challenges at destinations for your clients, the more you can attempt to prepare your client for how that will impact their freight movements, timelines, and even destination expenses.
Good news sources vary, but seek out those that provide a variety of international coverage – whether online, in print, on demand or on cable. The benefits to yourself and your customers will be advantageous.
