Coronavirus Update - May 26

Efforts to curb the virus outbreak within Brazil, the South American hotspot are mixed. Some areas have implemented strict social distancing measures while others have not. Beginning tonight at midnight, the United States is restricting travelers who have been in Brazil in the last 14-days. The new restrictions do not apply to the movement of cargo between the two nations. 

Americas

  • All 50 US states have begun reopening in some form or another. Restrictions vary greatly by state, county and city. In some areas full reopening has occurred while in others only a small number of public places are open.
  • The Mexican automotive industry is scheduled to resume production June 1.
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil has extended their lockdown measures until May 31.

United States – 1,662,768 confirmed cases, 379,157 (23%) recovered, 98,223 deaths
Brazil – 374,898 confirmed cases, 153,833 (41%) recovered, 23,473 deaths 

EMEA

  • LATAM cargo began, for the first time, offering flights from Europe to the US. Twice-weekly flights from Frankfurt to Miami will be offered.
  • Finland land border controls have been extended until June 14.
  • The United Kingdom has implemented a 14-day self-quarantine requirement for people entering the nation.

Russia – 362,342 confirmed cases, 131,129 (36%) recovered, 3,807 deaths 
United Kingdom – 262,547 confirmed cases, 1,161 (0.4%) recovered, 36,996 deaths
Spain – 235,400 confirmed cases, 150,376 (64%) recovered, 26,834 deaths 
Italy – 230,158 confirmed cases, 141,981 (62%) recovered, 32,877 deaths 
France – 183,067 confirmed cases, 65,317 (36%) recovered, 28,460 deaths
Germany – 180,802 confirmed cases, 161,599 (89%) recovered, 8,329 deaths
Turkey – 157,814 confirmed cases, 120,015 (76%) recovered, 4,369 deaths 

APAC

  • Airlines in Singapore are preparing to resume passenger travel. Long security lines, delays and higher fare prices are expected.
  • India resumed domestic flights today amid growing virus confirmed cases. State governments are watching levels closely and continuing to designate each region using the red, orange or green zone classification system implemented by the national government.
  • Demand for air freight into and out of China is continuing to increase.

India – 146,376 confirmed cases, 61,151 (42%) recovered, 4,187 deaths
China – 84,102 confirmed cases, 79,353 (94%) recovered, 4,638 deaths

* Chicago, Denver, Atlanta and New York City airports are operational for cargo, but staffing reductions are impacting efficiency. No freighters are flying in Denver as a result of state government restrictions. Los Angeles and San Diego operating with restricted operations, cargo movement impacted.
** Restricted operations in India are impacting cargo flights; freighters are operating with reduced capacity.  Customs of non-essential goods have resumed subject to availability of Custom’s officers.

United States of America Domestic Trucking Overview – Updated 05.26.2020 

The US total trucking market is slowly moving toward a return to pre-COVID levels. The total trucking market remains about 35% below normal levels. The dry van and refrigerated trucking segments have rebounded quite nicely, while the flat bed segment is lagging.  

  • Rates within most US markets are currently at normal or below normal levels however areas that may see an increase are:
    • Loads with an origin of Oregon, Idaho and South Dakota
    • Loads with a destination of Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Montana and Arizona
