Coronavirus Update - May 21

Americas 

  • Illinois, New Jersey, and Delaware remain largely shutdown, with the exception of public parks and the like; all other US States have started to ease restrictions regionally, statewide, or have plans in place to do so soon.
  • The Mexican automotive industry is scheduled to resume production on June 1.
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil has extended its lockdown measures until May 31.

United States – 1,555,537 confirmed cases, 294,312 (18%) recovered, 93,558 deaths

Brazil – 291,579 confirmed cases, 116,683 (40%) recovered, 18,859 deaths 

EMEA

  • France has temporarily lifted the driving ban for vehicles heavier than 7.5 tonnes between May 31 and June 1.
  • Turkey has issued a brief total lockdown until May 26. Pick-up, delivery delays, and increased transit times are likely.
  • Increased travel at the Poland and Germany border is causing land border delays of up to 9 hours. The delays are expected to continue until Sunday when the German holiday weekend ends.

Russia – 317,554 confirmed cases, 92,681 (29%) recovered, 3,099 deaths 
United Kingdom – 252,234 confirmed cases, 1,116 (0.4%) recovered, 35,786 deaths
Spain – 232,555 confirmed cases, 150,376 (65%) recovered, 27,888 deaths 
Italy – 227,364 confirmed cases, 132,282 (58%) recovered, 32,330 deaths 
France – 181,700 confirmed cases, 63,472 (35%) recovered, 28,135 deaths
Germany – 178,748 confirmed cases, 158,057 (88%) recovered, 8,195 deaths
Turkey – 152,587 confirmed cases, 113,987 (75%) recovered, 4,222 deaths 

The Indian aviation minister announced that domestic air travel within India is set to resume on May 25. There was no indication of when international travel will resume.

China – 84,063 confirmed cases, 79,310 (94%) recovered, 4,638 deaths

* Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, and New York City airports are operational for cargo, but staffing reductions are impacting efficiency. No freighters are flying in Denver as a result of state government restrictions. Los Angeles and San Diego operating with restricted operations, cargo movement impacted.
** Restricted operations in India are impacting cargo flights; freighters are operating with reduced capacity.  Customs of non-essential goods have resumed subject to availability of Custom’s officers.

United States of America Domestic Trucking Overview – Updated 05.21.2020 

The US total trucking market is slowing moving toward a return to pre-COVID levels but there is still a ways to go. Dry van activity increased last week but has plateaued again and currently sits at 73% of prior levels. Within the refrigerated segment, volumes have been relatively stable since consumer panic buying ended late April and flatbed volumes, although the slowest to resume, has over doubled since mid-April.  

  • Rates within most US markets are currently at normal or below normal levels however areas that may see an increase are:
    • Loads with an origin of Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota
    • Loads with a destination of Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, Arizona
