Coronavirus Update - March 4th
As confirmed cases of the coronavirus continues to tic-up in countries around the world, Allyn International will continue to provide updates and logistics solutions as necessary to ensure our clients are informed and prepared to navigate the everchanging global logistics challenges we are currently facing.
In a preliminary study conducted by Peking University’s School of Life Sciences and the Institute Pasteur of Shanghai has detected two strains of the coronavirus. The first strain which began in China in late December is more aggressive and has accounted for 70 percent of the cases, while 30 percent of confirmed cases is linked to a less aggressive type. Researchers have also indicated that the virus has decreased in frequency since early January.
China
- 80,270 confirmed cases, 49,928 recovered, 2,981 deaths
- Conditions continue to ease throughout mainland China. Authorities are lifting citywide lockdowns and the country is beginning to rebound
- 80 percent of factories are now open, operating between 30 and 60 percent of capacity
- Hubei is still experiencing truck restrictions and most enterprises are not in operation
South Korea
- 5,621 confirmed cases, 41 recovered, 28 deaths
- Airports are operating normally, however many passenger flights have been cancelled.
- Raised the virus alert level to “red” – the highest level
- Most cases are in and around Daegu, the country’s fourth-largest city
Iran
- 2,922 confirmed cases, 552 recovered, 92 deaths
- Top government officials are banned from leaving the country until further notice
- Outbreak has reached all of Iran’s provinces
- Kazakhstan closed its Caspian Sea ports of Aktau and Kuryk to ships carrying passengers from Iran
Italy
- 2,502 confirmed cases, 160 recovered, 79 deaths
- Lombardy is the most affected region (1,520), Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily and Sardinia have also reported cases
- Schools are closed until mid-March
- 10 Italian towns are under lockdown, cancelled major sporting events
- Country is debating closing its borders with neighboring countries
Japan
- 304 confirmed cases, 43 recovered, 6 deaths
- Airports are operating normally, however many passenger flights have been cancelled
- Schools have been closed until early April
Additional notable updates:
- United Arab Emirates is closing schools and universities beginning March 8th. UAE is also postponing large-scale events including concerts and sporting events.
Global shipping costs are expected to continue to increase for several weeks. It is advised that early booking will be beneficial not only for lower costs but also to secure space.

Ocean Transport –Updated 03.04.2020
- Although seaports are operational, it is important to contact the carrier to verify capacity as the number of blank sailings is increasing throughout the region.
Road Transport – Updated 03.04.2020
- All highways in China are toll-free until the end of June
- Possible delays due to continued driver shortages
