Coronavirus Update - March 23

Allyn International is committed to providing you with the latest and most accurate updates during this very fluid and everchanging period. Our goal with the information provided below, is to give you, at a high-level, the current outlook of the most heavily impacted regions.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide is increasing rapidly. As a result, each country, state and/or province is implementing their own guidelines involving border closures, social distancing and business closures. Although greatly affected by the guidelines, the movement of cargo, in particular, medical supplies and food transportation are not restricted.

EMEA

  • Europe is now the epicenter of the pandemic
  • Rome has ordered all businesses with the exception of those providing essential supplies to close until April 3.
  • Export volumes are expected to continue to decline as additional business restrictions are enforced, import volumes remain steady.

Italy – 63,928 confirmed cases (158% increase since 3.16.2020), 7,024 recovered, 5,476 deaths

Spain – 33,089 confirmed cases, 3,355 recovered, 2,206 deaths

Germany – 28,798 confirmed cases, 422 recovered, 116 deaths

Americas

  • Several carriers are offering cargo-only PAX aircraft charters. American Airlines, Delta and IAG are among those offing the cargo-only charter service.
  • Caribbean Airlines Cargo has suspended 2 freighter services; Tuesday’s Miami, US to Kingston, Jamaica and
  • Thursday’s service Miami, US to Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, via San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  • US spot truckload rates have increased by single digits. Capacity continues to remain stable.
  • Workers at ports, warehouses and trucking companies are receiving exemptions from state “stay-at-home mandates. They are considered essential to the US supply chain.
  • As confirmed cases increase throughout Latin America, many LATAM nations are taking cautionary measures to reduce the spread of the virus. At this time, it appears none of the restrictions apply to the movement of goods.

United States

  • 41,047 confirmed cases (977% increase since 3.16.2020), recovered statistic not available, 485 deaths

APAC

  • Beginning Wednesday, Hong Kong is banning all tourists into the city.
  • New Zealand raised their alert level to the highest level. Self-isolation measures are being implemented and nonessential services and schools will be closed for, at a minimum, the next 48 hours.
  • As a result of border restrictions, Singapore Airlines is cutting 96 percent of its capacity through the end of April.
  • Nepal closed it’s land borders with China and India for at least one week. This ban does not include cargo. All international air travel to/from Nepal is suspended until March 31.
  • Maharashtra, India declared a near-total statewide lockdown until March 31. The lockdown does not include movement of goods.

China

  • 81,496 confirmed cases (0.6% increase since 3.16.2020), 72,819 recovered, 3,274 deaths

Middle East

  • The UAE is suspending all passenger flights for two-weeks. Cargo and emergency evacuation fights are exempt.
  • Saudia Airlines Cargo Company (Saudia Cargo) has increased their cargo flight schedule to Dubai and European hubs. Flights to Europe will continue through Frankfurt and Liège and Dhaka stations.

Iran

  • 23,049 confirmed cases (65% increase since 3.16.2020), 8,376 recovered, 1,812 deaths

Air Cargo Transport – Updated 03.23.2020

  • Cargo-only flights are being added to carrier networks to assist with the mismatch of supply and demand
  • Price increases are expected to continue until mid-April


* Wuhan airport has reopened. Flights will resume, at earliest, the end of March.
** Hefei airport is operational however passenger flights are still suspended. No impact to import, export, or custom clearances.

Ocean Transport –Updated 03.23.2020

  • Blank sailing schedules are expected to increase over the next two-weeks, will likely result in rate volatility
  • Equipment shortages in the EU and NAM
  • Booking lead time for backhaul trade is around 4 to 5 weeks within the EMEA


*The Hubei province (including Wuhan) ocean port continues its’ suspension of all transportation
