Coronavirus Update - June 4

Allyn International is committed to providing you with the latest and most accurate updates during this very fluid and ever-changing period. Our goal with the information provided below, is to give you, at a high-level, a current overview of the most heavily impacted regions.  

The US government recently announced a restriction banning Chinese passenger airlines from flying into the United States beginning June 16. According to US government officials this ban is in response to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) not allowing US passenger airlines to resume flying passengers to China. Within hours of President Trump’s announcement, China released a statement indicating that foreign passenger airlines can operate, under certain guidelines, one flight per week. The situation will likely continue to evolve and does not include any restrictions on the movement of cargo between the two countries.   

Americas 

  • American Airlines is increasing its widebody operations from 140 to 296 flights per week. Beginning today the airline added additional flights from Miami (MIA) to Sao Paulo (GRU) and Miami (MIA) to Santiago (SCL).
  • LATAM Cargo Brazil is increasing cargo operations to transport essential goods to several Brazilian States.
  • FedEx announced a series of new temporary delivery surcharges to offset rising costs and manage the surge of packages. The new fees are slated to go into effect on June 8 and will include surcharges for FedEx SmartPost packages ($0.40/package), domestic residential FedEx Express and FedEx Group ($0.30/package) and oversized US domestic FedEx Express and FedEx Ground packages will see a surcharge of $30/package.
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil will continue their lockdown until June 15 while other Brazilian cities have already started to reopen while continuing with social distancing and other precautions.

United States – 1,852,561 confirmed cases, 479,258 (26%) recovered, 107,191 deaths
Brazil – 584,016 confirmed cases, 238,617 (41%) recovered, 32,548 deaths 

EMEA

  • Turkish airline Pegasus Airlines has resumed domestic flights and as of today is currently flying to 27 destinations in Turkey.
  • Air Arabia has resumed cargo service to several destinations including Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, India and Nepal.
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR) released information regarding its’ pandemic operational plan including passenger numbers and increased cargo operations.
  • French airline Corsair International postponed its plan to add flights to New York City until the spring of 2021.

Russia – 440,538 confirmed cases, 204,197 (46%) recovered, 5,376 deaths 
United Kingdom – 281,270 confirmed cases, 1,212 (0.4%) recovered, 39,811 deaths
Spain – 240,326 confirmed cases, 150,376 (63%) recovered, 27,128 deaths 
Italy – 233,836 confirmed cases, 160,938 (69%) recovered, 33,601 deaths 

APAC

  • Lockdown measures including nightly curfews in India continue to be lifted throughout the country. Government officials are constantly monitoring COVID infections and adjusting their policies as needed.

India – 217,967 confirmed cases, 104,371 (48%) recovered, 6,094 deaths

* Chicago, Denver, Atlanta and New York City airports are operational for cargo, but staffing reductions are impacting efficiency. No freighters are flying in Denver as a result of state government restrictions. Los Angeles and San Diego operating with restricted operations, cargo movement impacted.
** Restricted operations in India are impacting cargo flights; freighters are operating with reduced capacity.  Customs of non-essential goods have resumed subject to availability of Custom’s officers.

United States of America Domestic Trucking Overview – Updated 06.04.2020 

Spot market load availability was 18% below the five-year average last week and about 11% below the same week in 2019. The Memorial Day holiday likely disrupted the overall volumes. Dry van volumes were up 3.5% from the week prior but have seen double-digit growth in the four previous weeks. Refrigerated volumes fell by 13.4% and flatbed volumes saw its first decline in five weeks dropping by 1.1% last week. 

  • Rates within most US markets are currently at normal or below normal levels however areas that may see an increase are:
    • Loads with an origin of Oregon, Wyoming and South Dakota.
    • Loads with a destination of Montana.
