Coronavirus Update - April 22

Although early hot spots such as Italy, Spain and New York are seeing a decline in hospitalizations and deaths other areas around the world have not seen such progress within their communities. Because of that variance and differing regulations regionally it is important to continue to closely monitor the entire path goods travel; doing so will enable you to make necessary adjustments to limit transit delays.

Americas

  • Argentina’s current mandatory quarantine is set to expire on April 26. It is unknown at this time if that will be extended.
  • Due to the increased number of freighters coming into the US from China, capacity on the return leg is available yet rates remain above pre-COVID-19 levels.
  • Mexican business restrictions are currently set to expire April 30.

United States – 826,248 confirmed cases, 75,682 (9%) recovered, 45,153 deaths

EMEA

  • Turkey is experiencing import and export delays due to equipment availability and decreased terminal operations.
  • European land borders are open to cargo transport and only minor delays are being experienced due to border controls.
  • Germany has cautiously reopened some small shops but continuing to restrict large gatherings until the end of summer.
  • Spain extended the nationwide lockdown until May however some factories and construction sites have been allowed to reopen.

Spain – 208,389 confirmed cases, 85,915 (41%) recovered, 21,717 deaths
Italy – 183,957 confirmed cases, 54,543 (30%) recovered, 25,085 deaths
France – 159,315 confirmed cases, 39,850 (25%) recovered, 20,829 deaths
Germany – 149,044 confirmed cases, 99,400 (67%) recovered, 5,127 deaths
United Kingdom – 134,635 confirmed cases, 644 (.5%) recovered, 18,147 deaths
Iran – 85,996 confirmed cases, 63,113 (73%) recovered, 5,391 deaths

APAC

  • Hong Kong added a 14-day extension on restrictions
  • Vietnam / Cambodia border remains closed to container movement by road
  • New Zealand ports are congested with essential goods taking priority

China – 83,868 confirmed cases, 77,861 (93%) recovered, 4,636 deaths

Global Air Cargo Transport – Updated 4.22.2020

  • Global freighter capacity is 20% higher than 2019 levels and there has been an increase in capacity at airports in China, Russia, South Korea, USA and some middle east airports.

*Aircraft from mainland China or South Korea will be limited to Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Osaka Kansai (KIX) international airports. Restrictions apply until at least the end of April.
** Atlanta and New York City airports are operational for cargo, but staffing reductions are impacting efficiency. No freighters are flying in Denver as a result of state government restrictions. Los Angeles operating with restricted operations, cargo movement impacted.
*** Restricted operations in India are impacting cargo flights; freighters are operating with reduced capacity. Customs of non-essential goods has resumed subject to availability of Custom’s officers.

Global Air Freight Capacity by Trade Lane – Updated 04.22.2020

  • Capacity remains low, especially for long haul and India destinations.

Global Ocean Transport Impact – Updated 04.22.2020

  • Additional black sailings have been announced reducing global capacity through June.

United States of America Domestic Trucking Overview – Updated 04.22.2020
A domino effect will be felt as cities and states around the United State begin to enact their reopening strategies. As businesses reopen and people return to their workplaces the demand for trucking will begin to increase. Experts believe the trucking industry will start to feel those effects mid-May given the spread of the virus continues to ease.

  • Dry van load availability dropped by nearly 19% in week 15, dropping to its lowest level since 2015.
  • Refrigerated load availability fell by 22%, the smallest week-over-week drop since week 11.
  • Flat bed load availability decreased by 15%, rates are down nearly 40 cents in four weeks.
  • Rates within most US markets are declining to below normal levels however areas that may see an increase are:
    • Loads with an origin of Washington, Wyoming and South Dakota
