Continuing Your Trade Compliance Education

As of June 22, 2023 Customs and Border Protection (CBP) published their final ruling on requiring continuing education for all individual licensed customs brokers. CBP will now require 36 continuing education credits to be completed during the three years of a triennial period.

Brokers must show completion of 36 continuing education credits at the time of filing their triennial report and must keep certain records of the continuing broker education completed for three years after submitting proof of completion and make those records available to CBP if requested.

For this upcoming triennial period- CBP will reduce the number of required continuing education credits for the upcoming triennial period on February 1, 2024. CBP will reduce the 36 continuing education credits, required to be completed, by 6 credits for about every six months between February 1, 2024 and the compliance date.

CBP will soon announce the qualified continuing broker education training and educational activities available to individual brokers to complete this new requirement. These new requirements will increase competency and knowledge among the trade compliance community as well as ensure that customs brokers remain knowledgeable in the field.
