Canada Updates List of U.S. Products Subject to Counter Tariffs

Over the last several months Canada and the U.S. have negotiated in good faith to come to a mutually beneficial trade agreement. Unfortunately, the Canadian Government recognized the final offer from the United States as neither fair nor economically sound and no agreement was established.

President Trump made the decision to impose a 50% ad valorem duty, under Section 338 of the Trade Act of 1930, on certain products of Canada. As a result, Prime Minister Carney announced that he would be matching the U.S.’ Section 338 tariff dollar for dollar.

The new targeted counter tariffs are concentrated in many different sectors but include many familiar items such as aluminum and steel, electronics and plastics. In certain sectors, such as steel and aluminum, existing counter-tariffs will increase from 25 per cent to 50 per cent to match U.S. rates.

Other existing counter-tariffs, including against U.S. autos, will also continue to apply.

These new countermeasures on products imported from the U.S. will be effective as of 12:01 a.m., September 8, 2026.

The list is published by the Canadian Department of Finance and can be reached at this link:
