Boosting Rail Infrastructure – One State at a Time

When you think of U.S. freight transportation what modes come to mind? Trucking? Air? We tend to forget about the not so distant cousin – rail. There is one company that certainly has not forgotten – Union Pacific Railroad. Union Pacific Railroad has been investing millions back into state rail infrastructures in the 23 western states they operate in. Their 2018 goal is to invest over $3 billion back into the company. The investment will focus on safety, efficiency in operations and customer service initiatives.

From 2011 to 2014 the Union Pacific Railroad oversaw an expansion, investing $400 million in their New Mexico facility. This facility created 600 permanent jobs. In addition, other large-scale projects have been started. For instance, a Texas project in Robertson County is expected to create 550 construction-related jobs, drawing on workers from the immediate area and across Texas. Once the project is completed, the upgrades will contribute almost $260 million in annual state revenue.
