2023 Logistics Performance Index: Recap, Key Takeaways, and Anticipation for the Future
In anticipation of the expected 2025 release of World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index results, we take a moment to recap some of the findings from the most currently released Logistics Performance Index.
The World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI) scores countries on how efficiently they move goods across and within borders. The LPI is the combination of the weighted average of the country scores on six key dimensions:
- The efficiency of the clearance process (i.e; speed, simplicity and predictability of formalities) by border control agencies, including customs
- Quality of trade and transport-related infrastructure (e.g., ports, railroads, roads, information technology)
- Ease of arranging competitively priced shipments
- Competence and quality of logistics services (e.g., transport operators, customs brokers)
- Ability to track and trace consignments
- Timeliness of shipments in reaching the destination within the scheduled or expected delivery time
With results on a scale of 1-5, users can identify the challenges and opportunities faced in their performance on trade logistics among a series of categories, along with overall LPI scores and ranks, and what can be done to improve performance. Also, with new supply chain tracking indicators, such as port dwell times, you can measure the speed of trade around the world.
The most current Logistics Performance Index score and rank results offer some key findings and takeaways:
- Singapore and Finland are the most efficient and highest ranked LPI countries
- Singapore leads the ranking with a 4.3 score
- Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands hold the same rank and position (3rd place)
- India has climbed six places, now ranking 38th place
- Afghanistan holds last place with a 1.9 score
Logistics Performance Index results have been used in many policy reports and documents prepared by multilateral organizations and findings from the index provide a worldwide general benchmark for the logistics industry and results have also been embraced by the academic community.
