Should I Ship FTL or LTL? Does It Matter?

When it comes to freight, size does matter. Whether your business is just starting or wanting to be proactive with upcoming holiday season volume- you’ll want to plan the logistics of goods and products—the “how” in getting goods from point A to point B. The two main reasons are:

  1. Logistics is the lifeblood of a company as its products are the primary source of income.
  2. Logistics can make or break your company’s profit margin and expenses.

If you are planning on utilizing trucks for transporting your goods, there are two primary shipments: LTL (Less Than Truckload) and FTL (Full Truck Load). FRC Logistics Inc. 2022. Businesses with volume and products that can take up the entire truck by themselves should ship FTL or ten or more pallets (≤ 15,000 lbs.). If your products are perishables or fragile, a dedicated truck should decrease the chances of damaged cases as the driver will take the product straight to delivery versus LTL making multiple stops. Sarah McCulken 2022. LTL shipments are low in cost because shippers only pay for the space they need. Please note this method has more risks since LTL loads have multiple stops, which means more exposure to damage. Every organization and manufacturer wants to ensure fewer overhead charges to keep product costs low. To address this problem, being mindful about choosing which mode will help drive down costs. Ultimately, deciding which mode to select for transporting goods comes down to three things: timeliness, product type, and prices.
