Logistics Trends for 2021

After such a transformative year for the supply chain industry, 2021 is finally here and these are the three biggest logistics trends we can be anticipating. The top three trends include advancements of sustainability, AI, and blockchain technology. It is crucial to track these ever-changing technological advances in order to have a successful future. According to SupplyChainBrain, “The supply-chain industry stands amidst unprecedented times. However, the future holds great promise. By embracing innovation in the form of various technologies, the industry is all set to face the challenges in the times to come and help businesses achieve greater operational efficiency.” With that being said, let’s take a deeper look into these 2021 trends.

1. Sustainability

The advancement of green logistics is becoming a vital trend in the supply chain industry. Aside from its benefit to the environment, it is also cost effective and promotes customer loyalty. For instance, the millennial generation is more likely to partake in a company that has an eco-friendly culture. It is also said that brands who promote sustainability, grow 6 times faster than companies who do not. We can see these advances by reducing bulky packaging and continually checking our carbon footprint.

2. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Large Scale Automation is the most common use of AI in the supply chain industry. This is helpful because it can automate logistics processes based off of previously collected data. Furthermore, this will help reduce human error and boost efficiency. Over the last 3 years, the supply chain industry has seen major growth in the use of AI, and we will continue to see this going into 2021.

3. Blockchain Technology

The primary use of blockchain is to improve data transparency with all concerned parties. As opposed to cloud sharing of data, blockchain is much more secure; it is well established and incorruptible. According to SupplyChainBrain, “Research suggests that blockchain can save $31 billion by 2024 for the food and beverage industry alone. In the coming year, we can expect to see wider adoption of blockchain technology across the supply chain.” Looking ahead, we can be hopeful about the future of the logistics industry. With the committed investment to new technologies and trends, we will be ready to take full advantage of the opportunities that are being forecasted in 2021.
