Dangerous Goods

Posted on May 06, 2019

Are you shipping dangerous goods and labeling your cargo correctly? Incorrect labeling and packaging can be deadly. March 10th marked the fourth container ship fire in four months. These fires have destroyed ships and cargo in addition to costing companies millions of dollars. This is a very serious situation - lives have been lost

German container line, Hapag-Lloyd AG states, it gets “around 3,000 undeclared or mis-declared bookings a year.” Officials have discussed if stricter penalties will help, but Hapag is among those who do not believe that it would make a difference. Unfortunately, people will ignore the regulations regardless.

Ship lines have a detailed stowage and segregation plan for each vessel sailing, but if cargo isn’t declared properly, the plan is worthless. Factually, “barbecue charcoal can burst into flames when the temperature rises. Fish food and pool-cleaning agents generate oxygen that can intensify a blaze.”

As a shipper, you are responsible to package and declare your dangerous goods correctly. Do not be negligent and be the one responsible for a fire that costs lives.
