UPS Using Beacons to Prevent Loading Errors

The new electronic beacon technology being installed by UPS has the potential to revolutionize the age-old issue of missing and misdirected freight. The beacon will work in conjunction with a scanner that is used by the UPS worker while loading a truck. If a package is loaded onto the wrong truck, the beacon will notify the worker of the error.

With the use of this technology, UPS estimates a 70 percent reduction in misrouted freight. UPS handles nearly 20 million packages a day. A 70 percent increase in efficiency is major for both UPS and the shipper. A lot of time and money is spent trying to locate missing freight, not to mention the shipper’s and carrier’s frustration.

This technology has the potential to dramatically increase the UPS bottom line. Not only are they saving money by becoming more efficient, their new process should instill a new-found confidence in shippers that their shipment will arrive on time. Shippers may decide that UPS is the smarter choice especially for time-sensitive freight.
