5G – Advancing Logistics & Global Connectivity
In an era where consumers reign supreme, logistics, transportation and connectivity are paramount. Expectations from suppliers are at an all time high, heavily influenced by the “Amazon Effect” which pushes for faster, cheaper, often even free, delivery by customers. These expectations go hand in hand with the need for higher visibility, a faster more efficient supply chain and the robust communications network to support the exponential rise in global connectivity. For transportation, technology can be both the driving force of growth and the solution to problems that rising demands create worldwide. One way this is being done is through globalization, where countries collaborate for a world that relies heavily on the transportation industry. Globalization is set to have a profound impact on supply chain.
One way in which globalization is changing the supply chain industry is through the use of 5G networks, which aim to provide download speeds of 10,000 megabytes per second allowing for faster, smarter, more efficient networking. 5G technology in tandem with the rise of smart cities and artificial intelligence, is paving the way for an interconnected world with seamless transitions visible from every point within the supply chain spectrum.
According to The Economist, both maglev trains and hyperloops could be options for countries and cities considering upgrades to their transportation infrastructure by the end of the 2020’s. Commuters and business travelers will benefit from decreased congestion, shorter security procedures, and faster transportation.
The days of waiting for touchpoints will soon be behind us with RFID live tracking technologies, Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication and connected traffic infrastructures all supported by 5G.
According to AT&T Business, “… city-wide 5G networks will make it easier for private fleet owners to get consistent telemetry data from their field service vehicles and delivery trucks. This data, delivered in real time, will help them track everything from vehicle location and speed to idle time and fuel consumption.”
This and other emerging technologies aim to offer a solution to the ever-growing need for drivers, damaged roadway systems, and adverse weather to meet demands from consumers for goods to be delivered safer, faster and cheaper.
